Jolyon Palmer Doubts Liam Lawson’s 2026 Racing Bulls Lead

Jolyon Palmer has expressed doubts about Liam Lawson’s readiness to lead the Racing Bulls team during the 2026 Formula 1 season, highlighting Lawson’s relative lack of experience. As the 2025 season saw a surge of rookie drivers join the grid, only Arvid Lindblad enters 2026 as a fresh face, making Lawson the least seasoned senior driver heading into this year. This raises questions about how the New Zealander will handle the responsibility of guiding Racing Bulls amid upcoming regulatory changes.

Experience Gap Compared to Former Rookie-Heavy Teams

Despite having competed in 35 Grand Prix events, Lawson faces the challenge of not only scoring points but also contributing to car development during testing. Racing Bulls selected Lawson over Yuki Tsunoda, who brings more experience, but Palmer questions whether Lawson has the maturity necessary to lead effectively. Drawing parallels to Haas’s difficult 2021 season with rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, Palmer noted the struggles teams encountered without an experienced driver in a transitional period.

“It was a tough year with the rookies, with Mick Schumacher, Formula 2 champ, and Nikita Mazepin as well, struggling so badly in his one and only year,”

Palmer reflected during Sky Sports F1 commentary.

“Mick did all right in 2022, held his own, but I do think having an established driver in the team is such a must-have, especially for a new set of regulations. It will be interesting to see with Racing Bulls this year, with Arvid Lindblad, obviously massively inexperienced.”

Liam Lawson’s going to have to lead the team now, he hasn’t got a huge amount of experience himself, has he?

Racing Bulls’ Least Experienced Driver Line-Up Since 2018

Traditionally, Racing Bulls has developed drivers with a view to preparing them for future seats with Red Bull. Recent line-ups, including drivers like Yuki Tsunoda who spent four years at Racing Bulls before promotion, have offered the team a blend of talent and seasoning. Past drivers such as Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat also had substantial F1 experience before advancing.

This year’s pairing of Lawson and Lindblad, both with relatively few race starts, represents Racing Bulls’ most inexperienced combination since 2018 when Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley took the wheel. While Gasly progressed to forge a strong F1 career, Hartley struggled to find consistent results during his 25 race starts. Lawson will likely hope to emulate Gasly’s trajectory rather than repeat Hartley’s difficulties.

Implications for Racing Bulls’ Season and Driver Development

With key questions surrounding Lawson’s ability to lead the team through major regulation shifts, the 2026 season could prove pivotal for Racing Bulls. The emphasis on driver experience, especially while adapting to technical changes, often affects the development pace and competitiveness of the team’s car. If Lawson cannot meet these demands, it could impact Racing Bulls’ results and, potentially, Lawson’s future career pathway within Formula 1.

As Racing Bulls plans to use the 2026 season to nurture talent for Red Bull’s main squad, how Lawson and Lindblad perform under these circumstances will be closely watched by fans and team management alike.
