Kimi Antonelli Hails Mercedes’ Last-Minute Repair Heroes

Kimi Antonelli praised his Mercedes mechanics as heroes for their extraordinary work repairing his car in time for qualifying at the Australian Grand Prix. After a heavy crash in the final practice session, the quick turnaround was crucial to keep his weekend alive and enable him to compete in qualifying.

The Italian driver encountered trouble at Turn 2 during the last moments of FP3 while beginning his qualifying simulation run. He ran wide over the kerbs and collided with the outside wall, causing his car to come to a halt beside the inside barrier, leaving debris scattered across the track.

Garage Transformed into Hub of Activity to Fix Car

Mercedes was left with approximately two hours to rebuild and prepare Antonelli’s car, turning his pit garage into a frenzy of activity. Even as qualifying began, the car was still on the stands surrounded by spare parts, but the team remained determined to get him out on track.

A fortuitous crash by Max Verstappen during Q1 paused the session, providing extra time. This allowed Antonelli to join the pitlane once qualifying resumed, despite ongoing repairs. Demonstrating resilience, Antonelli battled through and advanced to Q3, securing a front-row start alongside teammate George Russell, who claimed pole position.

Qualifying Performance and Aftermath

Antonelli finished just 0.293 seconds behind Russell, reflecting how hard the mechanics’ quick work paid off. Commenting on his challenging day, Antonelli said,

“Yeah, it’s been a very, very stressful day,”

and added,

“Unfortunately, in FP3, I went into the wall but the guys, the mechanics today were the heroes to put the car back on track.”

He continued,

“And we couldn’t even set up the car, we just went out and just managed to put it on the front row. So I’m really happy with that.”

Despite the progress, Antonelli acknowledged the difficulties of a compromised qualifying and called for a clean weekend ahead:

“It was not easy. I had to dig deep. But yeah, I need to have a clean weekend next time because I definitely compromised a little bit qualifying. But we have a race tomorrow to look ahead and a good result is possible.”

Stewards’ Investigation and On-Track Incidents

After qualifying, it emerged Antonelli faced a stewards’ inquiry over an unsafe release during Q3, where a cooling blower remained attached to his sidepod as he left the pits. This device detached into Turn 1, breaking apart and sending debris onto the circuit. Lando Norris eventually ran over one of the pieces, spreading additional track hazards.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the error was on the team:

“I’m feeling relieved, for the hard work that was put in from everyone in the UK, and then the mechanics today did an awesome job,”

he told Sky.

Wolff described the condition of Antonelli’s car before the session as patchwork, remarking,

“That car looked like a Lego Formula 1 car that was thrown on the floor like literally two hours before and I said to them that five minutes before the start of the session we wouldn’t make it.”

He added,

“Then, obviously Max went off and that gained us the minutes to put the car out.”

Wolff on Antonelli’s Driving and Future Prospects

Wolff spoke about Antonelli’s aggressive driving style and the challenges it poses:

“I said it last year, it’s easier to slow someone down than trying to make a donkey fast. Dampening somebody’s energy in the car is something that is also a matter of time and risk-reward ratio, he never feels that he’s taking too much risks.”

He continued,

“But then he’s putting it so much on the edge and that’s something he’s going to learn, we had a few of these now but they’re part of him growing.”

The Importance of the Repair Effort and Outlook for Antonelli

The swift recovery work by the Mercedes crew was instrumental in salvaging Antonelli’s qualifying session, allowing him to compete despite significant damage earlier in the day. His front-row start under such pressure underscores the skill and dedication of the team behind him.

Looking forward, Antonelli faces both stewards’ scrutiny and the challenge of delivering a solid race result after a tense qualifying. The incident serves as a reminder of the fine margins in Formula 1, where quick repairs and team coordination can make the difference between success and setback during a Grand Prix weekend.
