Lando Norris: Ferrari and Red Bull Leave McLaren Behind

Lando Norris has expressed concerns that both Ferrari and Red Bull are currently outpacing McLaren as teams intensify their preparations for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Despite McLaren’s strong performance in recent years and positive momentum going into the new campaign, Norris recognizes that they are trailing these leading teams.

McLaren operates as a customer team in an era where power unit development is critical to success. This status places them at a disadvantage compared to manufacturer teams like Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari, which have deeper knowledge and greater influence over their engine technology.

McLaren’s Unique Strategy in Pre-Season Testing

Unlike many other teams that push forward with upgrading development components throughout testing, McLaren has taken a different path by postponing significant design changes. This approach allowed them to present a car in Melbourne that is optimized for initial shakedown runs rather than peak performance upgrades.

During pre-season testing, Norris completed a full race simulation, demonstrating a solid performance; however, he acknowledged that McLaren’s speed is still behind Ferrari’s recent runs. After testing, Norris told the media, including Sky Sports,

“Plenty of work for us to look into and try to improve on. I think today was our first bit of understanding on where we stand in terms of pace, against at least Ferrari, who did a full long run. We’re not really close to them at the minute. We’re certainly not bad, but we’re not quick enough.” ?Lando Norris, F1 Driver

He further emphasized the early stage of the process, stating,

“It’s still just testing and we’ve got plenty of things we know we can already improve on and work on, so nothing to be worried by, but a productive day for the teams and for myself, and that’s the most important thing.” ?Lando Norris, F1 Driver

Red Bull Shows Strong Power Unit Performance, Says Norris

Red Bull has attracted considerable attention for building its first in-house power unit, which appears to be highly competitive. Norris highlighted that Red Bull, along with the new Ford powertrain, holds a noticeable advantage over McLaren and Mercedes in certain technical areas.

He explained,

“They have a very good power unit by the looks of things. They deploy and have a lot of efficiency [with their engine energy management]. We need to understand how they have that. There’s always things I can maybe do a little bit, there’s some things on the McLaren side we can do a little bit, but also from McLaren, HPP [Mercedes High Performance Powertrains] side, and Mercedes, I think that they know there’s certainly areas we need to improve.” ?Lando Norris, F1 Driver

Norris also added,

“But the Red Bulls seem to have done a very good job, and the Ford powertrain seems to be very strong. Fair play to them. But, at the minute, they’re a good step ahead of us.” ?Lando Norris, F1 Driver

The Challenge Ahead for Norris and McLaren in 2026

As the reigning Formula 1 world champion, Lando Norris aims to defend his title against a field that includes some of the sport’s strongest competitors. Historically, no British driver has successfully retained their first world championship, adding an extra layer of pressure on Norris this season.

Facing formidable challengers such as Max Verstappen and powerful teams like Ferrari and Red Bull, Norris and McLaren must close the gap in power unit performance and overall pace. How McLaren adapts to these challenges could significantly shape their prospects in the 2026 championship battle.
