Lando Norris’s McLaren MCL40 Unveiled for 2026 F1 Season

McLaren, reigning world champions, have unveiled the livery of their 2026 Formula 1 car, the MCL40, ahead of the upcoming season. The launch took place in Bahrain just before pre-season testing began, emphasizing continuity in design despite major changes to the car’s specifications under new F1 regulations.

This year’s car design was initially shown in a unique dark livery during its debut at the Barcelona shakedown last month but will race in a scheme closely resembling McLaren’s previous two seasons. The signature papaya orange remains the dominant color, maintaining a visual connection to their recent successes.

Choosing Stability in Design to Build on Past Success

McLaren deliberately retained a familiar livery formula to sustain the momentum from past winning campaigns. Zak Brown, the team’s chief executive, explained this choice by highlighting their preference to maintain what has proven effective.

We don’t want to change what’s been successful,

Zak Brown, McLaren CEO.

Defending Drivers’ Champion Lando Norris will lead McLaren into the new campaign, striving to hold onto his title after winning in the final round last season. His teammate Oscar Piastri enters 2026 motivated to improve after a career-best third place finish marred by a disappointing conclusion.

Discussing the visual impact of the livery, Norris said the choice favors visibility throughout the season.

As much as I loved the test livery that we had, this is the one that’s always going to be better through the course of the season on TV,

Lando Norris, McLaren driver.

Expectations for McLaren’s Competitiveness with New Regulations

Powered once again by Mercedes engines—expected to lead the field in 2026—McLaren enters the year as back-to-back constructors’ champions. Despite their previous dominance, team management acknowledges the reset caused by sweeping new chassis and power unit rules, meaning all teams start on an even footing.

I wouldn’t bet against our people but this sport is unbelievably competitive and it’s going to be a pretty fearsome season this year,

Zak Brown, McLaren CEO.

McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella emphasized the importance of ongoing development throughout the season rather than relying on initial race order.

Irrespective of the pecking order at the first race, I think the first season will be a game of development and who will have developed the most may be the successful one at the end of this season,

Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal.

He added that McLaren has balanced their investment between last year’s championship efforts and this year’s new car development, expressing optimism about their chances.

[Last year] we needed to reflect on the resources that we invested on pursuing the championship and onto the new car. We think we have achieved the right balance, so we are optimistic that the MCL40 will be a strong contender.

Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal.
