Lando Norris has opened up about the challenge of fully accepting that he is now a Formula 1 World Champion. The British driver secured his first Drivers’ title last year during a dramatic final round in Abu Dhabi, earning the right to race with the #1 on his McLaren car for the 2026 season.
Following his victory, Norris returned to the team’s Woking base where celebrations quickly took place. Although his championship triumph came early in December, he has already resumed testing duties as preparations for the upcoming title defense accelerate.
Adjusting to Life as a World Champion
During the recent pre-season testing in Barcelona, Norris shared with the F1 website that despite some time having passed, he still finds it difficult to truly absorb the fact that he achieved his dream.
“I wish I had one more month to lay back and enjoy everything, take everything in,”
he remarked, highlighting the brief break he had to process his success.
He continued,
“It was a few weeks off. It didn’t even feel like a month off. It was a few weeks off of just trying to realise what had happened last year.”
It had become a reality, my dream. I’m still, even now, trying to just accept it and realise that it’s happened.

Preparing for the Upcoming F1 Season
While embracing the significance of his achievement, Norris has quickly shifted his focus back to racing. He is committed to helping develop the new McLaren MCL40, designed according to the fresh set of F1 regulations introduced this season. The technical challenges this year mark a major shift for all teams competing.
But at the same time, it’s back to work and now we’ve got to try and do it all over again,
Norris said, acknowledging both the excitement and pressure ahead.
He added,
“So it makes me happy, it gives me good confidence coming into this season. But it’s so different, such a big challenge with all the regulations, all the changes this year.”
But I feel good. I’m happy I’ve accomplished something huge in my life.
