Lando Norris, the reigning Formula 1 world champion, recently revealed his interest in having Max Verstappen as a teammate at McLaren. Speaking at an event in London, Norris identified Verstappen, a four-time world champion, as one of the drivers he would consider teaming up with if not for the presence of Oscar Piastri.
Over the past two F1 seasons, Norris and Verstappen have evolved from friends into fierce rivals, battling for the drivers’ championship in both 2024 and 2025. Verstappen secured the title in 2024, while Norris narrowly won the championship the following year, marking his first world title.
Despite the intensity of their on-track battles, the pair have kept a cordial relationship off the circuit. Although they have occasionally exchanged pointed remarks during their championship duels, their rivalry has not impaired their personal rapport.
Norris Names Top Choices for McLaren Teammates
During a recent Q&A, Norris was asked which drivers he would want as teammates at McLaren besides Oscar Piastri. Among names like Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz, Norris also included Max Verstappen on his shortlist. McLaren CEO Zak Brown reacted in surprise at the mention of Carlos Sainz, prompting Norris to clarify his choice.
“Carlos?” questioned McLaren boss Zak Brown, who was also present on stage.
“Carlos was good, yeah. And Max, Max as well,” Norris replied.
This indicates Norris’s respect for Verstappen as a competitor, despite their rivalry, and highlights his openness to challenging himself alongside established stars.

Championship Dynamics in the 2025 Season
The 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ championship initially appeared to be a tussle primarily between Norris and Oscar Piastri, with McLaren dominating early rounds while Verstappen and Red Bull faced difficulties keeping pace. Following the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen trailed the championship leader, Piastri, by a substantial margin of 104 points.
However, Verstappen mounted an impressive comeback in the second half of the season, closing the gap to just two points behind Norris by the finale. Piastri, who led the championship for 14 rounds, ultimately finished third, underscoring the dramatic shifts during the campaign.
Norris Revises His Stance on the 2026 F1 Car Regulations
Initially, Lando Norris expressed enthusiasm for the new 2026 F1 regulation cars after the first Bahrain pre-season test. Yet, during the second test, he reversed his tone, admitting that his earlier positive remarks were partly to avoid starting the season with negative feedback.
Previously, Norris had criticized Verstappen for describing the new regulations as “anti-racing” and even hinted that Verstappen might retire if he lost passion for Formula 1. Norris has since acknowledged that he largely agrees with Verstappen’s criticisms regarding the current state of the cars.
“I agree with Max on a lot of comments. Probably most of the comments I agree with. I just didn’t want to come out into the media and complain to everyone on the first weekend back,” said Lando Norris [via The BBC].
He emphasized that while he still enjoys driving, the current regulations necessitate improvements to return to the purest form of racing.
“We’re trying to improve the car that we have now, because it’s certainly not the purest form of racing, and that’s what Formula 1 should be.”
Norris explained that the 2026 rules have shifted driver focus more towards managing battery optimization rather than maximizing the car’s raw performance, especially through corners. He also joked that his initial positive comments were partly to observe reactions from fellow drivers and fans.
Significance and What Lies Ahead
Lando Norris’s openness to racing alongside Max Verstappen at McLaren signals a willingness to embrace fierce competition within his own team, which could push both drivers to new heights. Their ongoing rivalry has captivated Formula 1 fans, adding an intense dynamic to recent title battles.
The shifts in championship standings during the 2025 season underscore how competition remains unpredictable, with resilience and strategy playing pivotal roles. Moreover, Norris’s candid reassessment of the 2026 car regulations highlights broader concerns within the sport about preserving the integrity and excitement of racing as Formula 1 evolves.
As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will remain on how teams and drivers adapt to regulation changes and whether the Norris-Verstappen rivalry could become a defining partnership in the future of McLaren and the sport.
