Mercedes-AMG has influenced the scheduling of preparation races ahead of the Nürburgring 24 Hours to accommodate Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 champion. This decision aims to maximize viewership and bring increased attention to the endurance race, highlighting Verstappen’s growing role in GT3 racing alongside his F1 career.
Max Verstappen’s Growing Impact in Endurance Racing
Verstappen’s impressive GT3 debut victory in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) earlier this year has generated significant excitement among motorsport fans. His continued involvement in endurance events like the Nürburgring 24 Hours presents major opportunities for the sport, especially as he balances his 2026 GT3 racing plans with evolving Formula 1 regulations. Verstappen commented,
“Next year depends on a lot of things, to be honest,”
signaling the complexities influencing his schedule.
The Dutch driver further explained,
“I suspect that with the rules next year, it’s going to be very complicated to start with, with some unknowns anyway. It probably will be a little bit more hectic than the end of a regulation where things are a bit more straightforward.”
He stressed that aligning with his GT3 team and finalizing the car choice remain key parts of his planning process.
Mercedes-AMG’s Role in the Date Change
Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes-AMG, confirmed the organization’s significant role in shifting the dates. Speaking at a media briefing in Bahrain, Wolff clarified,
“It wasn’t me personally; it was AMG together with the NLS organizers,”
adding,
“It’s an obvious benefit for all the participants and for the series.”
The Boost in Audience Engagement Due to Verstappen’s Involvement
The presence of Max Verstappen has drastically increased audience numbers for the NLS events. Wolff emphasized this impact, stating,
“Between a normal NLS round, we have 100 times more spectators on YouTube with Max participating than otherwise.”
He highlighted the jump in viewers from around 10,000 to an astonishing 750,000. Wolff also remarked,
“So it’s a no-brainer to change it, and I think it’s great for the 24 hours, for the fans to have Max there, and obviously driving a Mercedes is something we enjoy.”
Anticipating the Future of Nürburgring 24 Hours with Max Verstappen
The collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Max Verstappen is poised to raise the Nürburgring 24 Hours to new heights, promising heightened excitement and engagement for motorsport fans worldwide. With significant viewership growth expected and a celebrated champion on track, this endurance event is shaping up to be an unmissable spectacle.
