Oscar Piastri grew visibly frustrated during the FP3 session of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend after Esteban Ocon consistently kept him in turbulent air, disrupting his fast lap effort. The incident unfolded at the 6.003-kilometre Baku City Circuit, where Piastri, leading the drivers’ championship, openly expressed his annoyance over the team radio.
Although the circuit typically allows drivers enough room to avoid such conflicts, Piastri encountered the slower-moving Ocon as he pushed for a quick lap in the closing free practice session. Rather than letting the faster car pass, Ocon prolonged his run, provoking an irritated response from the 24-year-old Aussie.
On the radio, Piastri exclaimed in frustration:
“Man, what is this wanker doing.”
In response, his race engineer, Tom Stallard, attempted to clarify the situation, suggesting that Ocon might have been on a continuous lap strategy. Nevertheless, it was later established that Ocon was completing a single cooldown lap after finishing his timed run, which meant Piastri simply caught up to him unexpectedly during his own flying lap around the street circuit.
Oscar Piastri Explains the Unique Challenges of the Baku Circuit
Having competed twice in Azerbaijan, Piastri is familiar with the track’s demanding layout. After finishing the initial 2023 season race with McLaren, when his team struggled for points, he returned to achieve victory in the latest edition after the full 51-lap distance. As a result, Piastri is well aware of how the circuit’s traits influence both car setup and race strategy.

During a pre-race press conference, he described the track’s demanding characteristics:
“It’s a very unique track. Very slow corners, long straights, little runoff — well, there’s runoff, but you’ve got to do a U-turn to come back on. The normal street circuit things, but with much heavier braking zones than normal.”
“The grip level increases a lot through the weekend. It’s a street circuit, but unlike others, you’ve really got to focus a lot on braking because you can win or lose a lot of time there, or break — or not break — a lot of parts on your car. The straight out of Turn 15 is a long time on full throttle with those two high-speed kinks; it takes quite a while, feels like maybe the longest straight of the season.”
These elements combine to make the Baku City Circuit a particularly nuanced venue, where drivers must delicately balance speed and mechanical preservation.
Championship Stakes Amid Rising Pressure on Piastri
As the championship battle intensifies, Oscar Piastri currently holds a 31-point advantage over teammate Lando Norris. However, this margin narrowed slightly after the Italian Grand Prix, where Piastri conceded three points to the Briton. The driver remains focused on increasing his lead at the Azerbaijan GP to guard against unforeseen setbacks that could jeopardize his pursuit of the season’s first title.
The clash with Esteban Ocon not only highlights the rising tension in a fiercely competitive environment but also underlines the challenges drivers face when managing track position and race tactics during practice sessions. With each race weekend critical to the championship fight, any disruption or miscalculation can have significant consequences on a driver’s title aspirations.
What This Means for the Upcoming Race and the Season
This incident during FP3 serves as a reminder of how even practice sessions, often considered less intense than qualifying or the race itself, carry high stakes for drivers jockeying for position and clean laps. Piastri’s frustration illustrates the pressure mounting on championship contenders as every moment on track becomes valuable.
As the Azerbaijan Grand Prix unfolds, the handling of traffic, strategy choices, and driver composure will be essential. Oscar Piastri’s leadership in the standings will be tested further against rivals like Lando Norris, while Esteban Ocon’s actions reveal the delicate balance teammates and competitors strike on street circuits like Baku.
