AJ Allmendinger Reflects on Tough Rolex 24 Return at Daytona

AJ Allmendinger made his return to the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway during the 2026 IMSA SportsCar Championship season opener, competing with Meyer Shank Racing (MSR). Racing in the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) category, Allmendinger and his team finished ninth overall, falling short of their goal to secure a podium position.

Competing in the No. 60 Acura alongside teammates Tom Blomqvist, Colin Braun, and Scott Dixon, Allmendinger’s race extended from Saturday afternoon into Sunday, concluding as Penske’s No. 7 Porsche claimed the victory. After the event, Allmendinger expressed gratitude toward his team and co-drivers for their efforts throughout the demanding competition.

“Not the race result we wanted but can’t thank @MeyerShankRac enough for giving me the opportunity to experience the @Rolex24Hours again. And all my teammates @colinbraun @tom_blomqvist @scottdixon9 @AlexPalou @Rengervdz @NickYelloly #Kaku for amazing memories on and off the track.” – AJ Allmendinger

Race Overview and Competitor Highlights

Throughout the race, Allmendinger maintained a competitive pace but could not mount a serious challenge for overall victory. The No. 7 Penske Motorsport Porsche, driven by Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich, slogged through a tough contest and ultimately took the checkered flag following a late duel with the Cadillac Whelen vehicle piloted by Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber, Frederik Vesti, and NASCAR Cup rookie Connor Zilisch.

This event marked Allmendinger’s 16th appearance at the Rolex 24. The 44-year-old captured an overall win at the event in 2012 with Meyer Shank Racing and secured podium finishes in 2013 and 2018. He last competed in the No. 60 Acura alongside Juan Pablo Montoya in 2021, finishing fourth overall, but this year’s race ended with more challenges than rewards.

The 2026 edition of the race was notably affected by an extended overnight caution due to dense fog, creating difficult conditions and a record-long delay. These extreme conditions provided a stern test of endurance for Allmendinger and the full field, experience that Allmendinger will rely upon as he transitions back to NASCAR competition.

AJ Allmendinger Details Pit Stop Error and GTP Learning Curve

Compounding the weekend’s difficulties, Allmendinger experienced a costly mistake early in the race when he misjudged his parking position during a pit stop. This error resulted in a drive-through penalty for the No. 60 Acura, forcing Meyer Shank Racing to work hard to regain lost ground during the prolonged fog-related caution period.

Despite the setback, Allmendinger and his teammates managed to climb back toward the top 10 in the GTP class as green-flag conditions returned with six hours remaining. Reflecting on his performance, Allmendinger acknowledged the challenges in mastering the technologically advanced GTP car, particularly when compared to the prototype experience of his co-drivers.

“There’s lots of buttons and it’s tricky to drive. … I’m trying to learn as quick as I can. I don’t want to be the slow guy and let them down. I know I’ll be the weak link, I just don’t want to be the weakest link in the chain.” – AJ Allmendinger

Focus Shifts Back to NASCAR with Upcoming Season Kickoff

Following his Rolex 24 experience, Allmendinger’s focus now returns sharply to NASCAR, with the Cook Out Clash just five days away. He has rejoined Kaulig Racing to prepare for the NASCAR Cup Series season and will retain support from Celsius, which has extended its partnership with Kaulig. The sponsorship will continue backing the No. 16 car at the Daytona 500 and selected Cup races throughout the year.

Allmendinger’s return to the intense and strategic environment of the Rolex 24 reinforces his resilience as a versatile driver. While the weekend did not yield the desired results, the insights gained during the grueling race and the experience of adapting to GTP machinery will be vital as he embarks on a challenging NASCAR season ahead.
