Alex Palou Dominates with Back-to-Back IndyCar Wins

The 2026 NTT IndyCar Series began with a tense race on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, where Alex Palou claimed his second consecutive victory Sunday afternoon. Palou’s win marked a significant moment early in the season, demonstrating his strong form in the IndyCar competition.

Early Race Incidents and Lead Changes Alter Dynamics

The event started with Scott McLaughlin on pole and Marcus Ericsson alongside him in second. However, the opening lap quickly saw the first caution after a collision involving Sting Ray Robb, Mick Schumacher, and Santino Ferrucci at Turn 4 disrupted the race flow. McLaughlin led the first 35 laps until his pit stop shuffled the lead among Marcus Ericsson, Scott Dixon, and Luis Foster.

During the pit sequences, a critical error occurred when Dixon’s right rear tire was not properly secured, causing him to lose the wheel on lap 42. This incident triggered the race’s second caution and forced Dixon to finish 23rd, a disappointing result for the experienced driver.

Palou’s Commanding Performance Seals Victory

Following the pit stops, as Foster headed to pit road, Palou took control of the race and dominated, leading 56 of the final 58 laps. He crossed the finish line 12.4948 seconds ahead of McLaughlin, earning his 20th career IndyCar win in just 99 starts. This win also put him in elite company as the first driver since Josef Newgarden in 2020 to win back-to-back races at St. Petersburg.

Previous drivers achieving consecutive victories at this venue include Helio Castroneves (2006-07), Juan Pablo Montoya (2015-16), and Sebastien Bourdais (2017-18), underscoring the significance of Palou’s accomplishment.

Top Ten Finishers and Upcoming Race Preview

The top five was rounded out by Christian Lundgaard, Kyle Kirkwood, and Pato O’Ward, while Marcus Ericsson, Josef Newgarden, Roman Grosjean, Rinus VeeKay, and Dennis Hauger completed the top ten. The race featured eight lead changes involving seven different drivers, highlighting a competitive field despite the interruptions.

The series now turns its attention to the next race at Phoenix Raceway, scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026, with coverage set to begin at 3 p.m. on Fox.

“I’m happy to get the win and the momentum for the season ahead.” ?Alex Palou, IndyCar driver
