Connor Zilisch, the NASCAR rookie driver for Trackhouse Racing, faced a challenging beginning to his 2026 Cup Series campaign. After enduring a difficult race at EchoPark Speedway on February 22, Zilisch shared his candid thoughts on social media while receiving encouragement from fans as he prepared for the upcoming Circuit of the Americas (COTA) race.
Setback at EchoPark Speedway in Early Season Race
Zilisch qualified in 31st place for the main event but showed notable resilience during stage one by climbing up to ninth position. Unfortunately, with 39 laps remaining in the 271-lap race, he was caught in a large multi-car crash triggered by Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, who made contact with Joey Logano. The incident also involved drivers Michael McDowell and William Byron, resulting in Zilisch’s race ending prematurely with a Did Not Finish (DNF).
Reflecting on the disappointment, Zilisch posted on X,
“Tough way to start the season, but still a long way to go. Lots of positives to take away from today in the @TeamTrackhouse camp. I just need to make it to the end of these things.”
His fans rallied behind him, expressing firm belief in his potential. One X user wrote,
“All good GOAT. Y’all got this. Cook em at COTA,”
while another added,
“You got time, plenty of runway in front of you. You’ll be rocking out soon.”
Additional supporters shared enthusiasm with comments like “We Ready For COTA!” and
“Real racing starts next week! Go get ‘em!”
Another fan reassured,
“COTA next week. You’ll be fine,”
and a NASCAR follower defended Zilisch by saying,
“Wasnt your fault today, it was @joeylogano‘s.”
Zilisch’s crash placed him 30th in the final standings for the race, earning just nine points for his effort. This follows his full-time debut at Daytona International Speedway, where he finished in 33rd place. The next race at the Circuit of the Americas is scheduled for March 1, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Recognition as Richard Petty Driver of the Year Before the Season
Prior to the 2026 Cup Series schedule, Connor Zilisch garnered significant acclaim by winning the 2025 NMPA Richard Petty Driver of the Year award. This honor marked another milestone early in Zilisch’s stock car career, earned especially after a standout rookie full-time Xfinity Series season.
Zilisch’s accomplishments in 2025 included 10 wins and an impressive streak of 18 consecutive top-five finishes, outperforming high-profile competitors like IndyCar champion Alex Palou, Cup Series veteran Denny Hamlin, Truck Series winner Corey Heim, F1 titleholder Lando Norris, NHRA Funny Car champion Austin Prock, NHRA Top Fuel racer Brittany Force, and Kubota High Limit Racing winner Rico Abreu.
The NMPA stated,
“2025 @JRMotorsports driver @ConnorZilisch was voted as the 2025 Richard Petty Driver of the Year by the NMPA Membership. Zilisch is the second consecutive year that a Xfinity (now O’Reilly Auto Parts) Series driver has received the award.”
Connor Zilisch became the second driver from JR Motorsports to earn this distinction, following Justin Allgaier, who won the award in 2024 after securing the Xfinity Series championship.
Outlook for the Season and Upcoming Challenges
Despite the rocky start to his NASCAR Cup Series rookie season, Connor Zilisch’s early achievements and fan support suggest he has the determination and talent to overcome initial setbacks. With the next race at COTA approaching quickly, both Zilisch and his team are focused on translating potential into consistent results. How he handles upcoming events will be crucial in shaping his path in the highly competitive environment of NASCAR’s top tier.
