McLaren revealed their 2026 Formula 1 car, the MCL40, on Monday in Bahrain as the team prepares for the upcoming pre-season test at the Sakhir International Circuit. As reigning champions, McLaren aims to secure their third consecutive constructors’ championship and continue Lando Norris’s momentum following his maiden drivers’ title last year.
Last season, Lando Norris narrowly claimed the driver’s championship by just two points over Max Verstappen, while his teammate Oscar Piastri finished third after leading the standings for 15 races in 2025. Both drivers position McLaren as strong contenders entering the 2026 season.
McLaren’s 2026 Prospects as Title Challengers
The Woking-based team is expected to challenge Mercedes for supremacy in 2026, despite Mercedes likely having the fastest power unit on the grid. McLaren aims to overcome reliability issues that affected past campaigns, with Oscar Piastri confident these problems will no longer hamper their championship bid.
However, readiness on track is only one part of the story, as the team has faced criticism over the design of their new car’s livery, which has failed to impress many fans.
Fans Disapprove of McLaren’s 2026 Livery Design
Continuing with their traditional papaya and black color scheme, McLaren’s MCL40 features an increased presence of papaya, particularly on the nose and rear wing. Despite this, fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) expressing disappointment and frustration at the lack of visual innovation.

One fan lamented:
“Threw a big opportunity with all the changes in regs to bring in something new and make it exciting. It looks….exactly the same,”
while another user bluntly stated,
“YES MCLAREN GIVE US NOTHING,”
with a third agreeing:
“About as anticipated… basically the same as last year.”
Some comments took a harsher tone:
“How can you make the same livery even UGLIER?!?!”
and
Nasty just like last year.
Another user questioned the rationale behind sticking so closely to the previous design:
“Be so fr all that just for the car to look almost identical to last year’s who do Mclaren think they are?”
Drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Share Views on New Look
Responding to the livery reveal on McLaren’s official YouTube channel, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris explained the team’s reasoning behind the continuity in design. Piastri appreciated the small adjustments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining what has brought success.
He said:
“Obviously, keeping with a very similar livery to what’s been successful for the last few years. Just a small tweak, but it’s good to see that there’s more papaya on there.”
Norris echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the subtle changes and the significance of consistency for visibility throughout the season.
He added:
“This is the one that’s always going to be better throughout the course of the season on TV and all those things, so sticking to what worked.”
What the 2026 Season Could Mean for McLaren
McLaren’s decision to maintain design elements from previous years emphasizes the team’s focus on performance and brand identity over radical aesthetic shifts. Given the team’s strong driver lineup and improved reliability prospects, the MCL40 is expected to be a serious contender against Mercedes in 2026.
While fans may be divided over the livery’s appearance, McLaren’s competitive ambitions remain clear as they seek to build on their recent championship successes. The upcoming tests at Bahrain will provide further insight into the MCL40’s on-track capabilities as the season approaches.
