NASCAR insider Karsyn Elledge strongly criticized Natalie Decker’s heated outburst against Sam Mayer during the United Rentals 300 season opener at Daytona International Speedway last Friday. The incident unfolded after a multi-car collision on Lap 91, which saw Decker lose her composure on the in-car radio, igniting widespread attention and debate.
The chaos began when Jeb Burton rear-ended Ryan Sieg, forcing Sieg’s car into an uncontrolled slide. This chain reaction pulled in Brandon Jones and Sam Mayer, with Mayer bumping Jones’s No. 20 car before crashing heavily into the SAFER barrier. Subsequently, Mayer’s damaged vehicle clipped Decker’s No. 35 car from Joey Gase Motorsports, sparking Decker’s furious response.
Decker directed an expletive-laden tirade at Mayer over her radio, expressing extreme frustration with the crash’s outcome. She said,
“Whoever that f*cking idiot was go to his f*cking pit. Why would he f*cking do that?! Ruined our f*cking race! Sorry everyone…great work.”
Karsyn Elledge Condemns Decker’s Reaction as Detrimental to Women in Racing
Former competitive driver and current podcast host Karsyn Elledge commented on Decker’s actions during an episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast. Elledge expressed disappointment, noting how the incident reflected poorly on women striving to be respected as serious competitors in motorsports.
Addressing the elapsed time it took Decker to confront Mayer, Elledge said,
“Between the taking three business days to run into Sam Mayer and the multitude of things I saw on social (media) last week…obviously, while I did not go much further, I witnessed a lot of women around me who have.”
She continued,
“It’s honestly embarrassing. It’s embarrassing for the women who have worked hard to have a place in this sport, to be taken seriously, to be seen as an equal competitor.”
Race Results and Upcoming Events After the Daytona Incident
Sam Mayer finished the race in 31st place, while Natalie Decker ended in 33rd. Austin Hill, driving for Richard Childress Racing, claimed victory by a razor-thin margin of 0.081 seconds over former champion Justin Allgaier. Ryan Sieg, Jordan Anderson, and Sammy Smith completed the top five.

The next challenge for the drivers is the Bennett Transportation & Logistics 250 at EchoPark Speedway on February 21. Fans can follow the race live on CW television and listen to real-time updates via PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Natalie Decker Shares Personal Story About Meeting Husband Derek Lemke
Aside from on-track controversies, Natalie Decker opened up about her personal life, recounting the story of how she first met her husband, Derek Lemke. Decker was just 14 years old when she spotted Lemke, a professional stock car driver, at his home race track in Elko, Wisconsin. Despite the age difference—Lemke was 18 and legally an adult—they eventually grew closer.
Decker vividly recalled the moment, telling Matt Tifft on the Speedway Sessions podcast,
“I was 14-years-old and I went to his home track at Elko (Wisconsin), and he was a few people in front of me in line checking in to get your pit pass. I look at my dad and I said, ‘Do you think that’s a hockey player AND a race car driver? Cause if that’s the case, I will marry that guy.’”
After waiting until she was legally an adult to reach out, Decker texted Lemke at 18. Their relationship blossomed over the years, culminating in their marriage on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2023. The couple welcomed their first child in February 2025, marking a new chapter in their lives.
